Koala Sightings
The health of the koala habitat around the Ballarat area has changed ceaselessly over time. In the mining boom of the late 19th century, koalas were rarely seen as the land was stripped of timber for industry. Today, habitat stress continues as housing estates expand, although parklands such as Woowookarung help restore balance.
Friends of Canadian Corridor is conducting an ongoing Koala Count, documenting sightings
to better understand how many koalas live in the region.
Our FoCC Koala committee person,
Jo Kelly (
https://inaturalist.ala.org.au/people/foccjopkelly), puts all the sightings into the
iNaturalist database as part of our Citizen Science Project which has been running since August 2018.
Please send sightings (with photos if possible) to foccinfo@gmail.com or message our FoCC Facebook page.
